  5. FORTRIX-VMS may be best understood as a program converter. An ASCII file
  6. containing VMS FORTRAN source statements is read in. During the first phase
  7. FORTRIX-VMS analyzes the syntax and parses each line, checking for valid VMS
  8. FORTRAN or ANSI FORTRAN-77 syntax. If the line is valid FORTRAN-77, it is
  9. passed through unchanged. If it contains features that are recognizable VMS
  10. extensions, a conversion is effected. A symbol table is built, local and simple
  11. conversions are completed, and certain more complex conversion requirements are
  12. gagged for the second and third pass. The second pass massages the symbol
  13. table, taking care of any cross-referencing requirements. Statement labels are
  14. generated as required, and any special symbols are created. The third pass does
  15. final formatting of the output and prints a listing. During processing all
  16. messages are echoed to the screen and inserted into the listing surrounded by
  17. comments. lines of input that are not understood by FORTRIX-VMS as either VMS
  18. FORTRAN or ANSI FORTRAN-77 compliant, are flagged and passed through
  19. unconverted. Manual intervention may be required to complete program conversion.
